Members of Compact Six are working to support arts education in the Greater New Orleans area.

Discipline-Based Arts Education

Several area schools, recognizing the value of the arts in the curriculum, are systematically integrating the arts with the core curriculum. (For a list of these schools, see Louisiana Schools with DBAE Curriculum.)

Using an approach known as Discipline-Based Arts Education (DBAE), these schools combine "the basics" with the four disciplines of the arts:

Lusher Alternative Elementary (New Orleans) and Mandeville Middle (Mandeville) have been selected by the National Arts Education Consortium to be part of the Transforming Education throught the Arts Challenge.

These Louisiana schools are among 36 Arts Partner Schools which will investigate how a comprehensive approach to arts education linked to whole school reform strategies can improve student achievement.
