How & Where to Register to Vote







Applications are available at:

  • Libraries

  • Drivers license bureaus

  • All Federal and State Offices

  • League of Women Voters Office

  • Registrar of Voters, All Satellite offices & Main Office (1300  Perdido St., City Hall, Room 1W24   565-7135)    Hours for the Registrar's Office are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  

  • Citizens who register by mail must vote for the first time in person & will need to show ID & proof of address

  • Voters in line when polls close are allowed to vote.

  • To vote in an election, you must be registered at least 24 days before the election.

  • To vote in an election you must show a picture ID.

  • You may change your party affiliation by notifying the Registrar's Office in person or by mail.

  • If you change your name, send a copy of your marriage license or a notarized copy of change of name to the Registrar's office.

  • If a citizen registered in person, he or she may write for an absentee ballot if necessary to vote absentee.


Absentee Voting

Absentee voting in person begins 12 days and ends 6 days prior to any scheduled election.  Absentee votes may only be cast by voters who will be out of town, or in some way unable to vote at any time on election day.  If you cannot go in person during that week you may write a letter well in advance requesting an absentee ballot, but you must state your name, address, and the reason you need the ballot.  Your reason will determine if you are eligible.  Locations:

Handicapped Voters Program

Physically handicapped persons who are unable to register in person or who wish to vote absentee should call or write the Registrar of Voters.
