Mission:

The Southeast Louisiana Black Chamber of Commerce Women's Business Center was founded in October 1995. This program has established programs and services to address the needs of start-up, established, and expanding business for socially and economically disadvantaged women . The program provides training and counseling to aid and encourage the growth and development of small businesses owned and controlled by women. Training and counseling is provided in the following areas: financial, marketing, management, business planning and government procurement.

This program, part of a group of Demonstration Projects, is one of only 20 sites in the nation. The Center is operated by the Southeast Louisiana Black Chamber of Commerce, an equal opportunity, non-profit organization serving 10 Louisiana parishes. The Chamber is the recipient of the award by the SBA to provide internet training and assist women in business, women who are considering starting a business and expanding thier business. The Chamber's Women's Business Center is the only Internet training recipient in the State of Louisiana.

The Women's Business Ownership Act become law in 1988 (Public Law 100-533). The purpose of the Act was to stimulate the economy by providing long-term training and counseling to aid and encourage the growth and development of small businesses owned and controlled by women. Title ll of the act established the Demonstration Program to assist women with financial, management, procurement and marketing assistance.

The WBC is funded in part by the United State Small Business Administration, which is matched through donations from corportions, foundations and individuals.

Women are currently starting businesses at nearly twice the rate of men and the trend shows no sign of slowing. Women face unique challenges in business.

The United States Small Business Administration's Office of Women's Business Ownership (OWBO) is the only office in the federal governent established to help women become full partners in economic development through small business ownership. OWBO provides programs to support women entrepreneurs from business startup to expansion through a varity of services and resources. Women throughout the country can log into the OWBO Home Page.
