Advocacy Programs

Have you visited our St. Joseph Church Wellness Center yet? If not, you need to do so. The old sacristy area that was converted into the Pastor's residence has experienced another conversion.

Thanks to grants from the Vincentians and from the Daughters of Charity we've been able to renovate the space for our Wellness Center. With this new facility we are now providing the following health and health education programs:

Twice a week, Fr. Jim Deshotel, S.J., a nurse-practitioner, provides limited medical care for the homeless.

Nurse-volunteers from the parish offer monthly blood pressure screening for parishioners at the Sunday Masses.

We provide a checkroom/dayroom for the many homeless people served by our parish. Here they can come in to have a cup of coffee or tea, a doughnut or cookie and will always find someone who will listen if they want to talk about a particular problem. Sr. Vera, our Homeless Advocacy Coordinator, is available everyday to attend to special needs of the homeless. She is assisted by two visiting full-time volunteers, Lorelle Lemascus and Greg Ricci.
